Wow, hard to believe we are in our 21st year!
In 1995 Mike Smith and several of his friends, who called themselves “The Orphans” (because they were empty-nesters, widowed, or divorced), decided that rather than spending money on each other at Christmas time, they would pool together their resources and help some children in need. This year will mark my eighth year working with Joy to the Children. Since 2003 I have watched hundreds of volunteers put in thousands of hours. Pirates Visit Joy to the Children
While most parents are sipping coffee from their favorite mug on Christmas morning, our family glances at the presents Santa has delivered into our home. With knowing smiles, we turn on the Christmas music and prepare breakfast while investigating what is in our stockings. After breakfast the adults dress in their finest holiday attire, shine our boots, gather up our weapons, kiss our children goodbye and hop into the family sedan to meet up with other Pirates for a day of un-pillaging and un-plundering right here in Nassau County, Florida. Sixteen years ago a group of adult friends gathered for Christmas and formulated a plan to share the joy of the holiday season with the underprivileged children of Nassau County and Joy to the Children began!
The endeavor started with 36 children and over the years has served close to 2500 children and their families. On Christmas morning 2009, 165 happy children and their families had a sumptuous feast and Continue reading

15 years ago a group of friends gathered for Christmas and decided to “share the joy” of the holiday season with those children, those families who might be struggling with hard times. So they put together an idea and, that following Christmas, JOY to the Children was born. That endeavor started with 36 children and has served close to 2300 children and their families in the past 14 years. We currently have 155 children for Christmas 2009 with that number most likely increasing by 10 or 15 by the time Christmas is here because of economically difficult times. Continue reading
